Go green, save some green. A few simple tips for around the house and yard that, with a little planning, can save you some time, money, and do some good for the planet.

  • Use native plants. They're easier to grow and maintain and they use less water.

  • Choose plants, trees, and shrubs that can adapt with the climate and soil conditions in your area. Local nurseries can provide a wealth of helpful information and help you put together a smart and savvy plan.

  • Use energy-efficient and natural products when improving and decorating your home. Think water-saving shower heads, toilets and faucets. Consider natural woods like bamboo, teak and other woods that grow fast instead of materials that come from old growth forests or that are grown and harvested unsustainably.

  • Get paid to go green. There are lots of programs and incentives available to mitigate the costs of choosing more eco-friendly options, so do some research and see what's out there. For example, consumers who purchase and install specific products, such as energy-efficient windows, insulation, doors, roofs, and heating and cooling equipment in the home can receive a tax credit of up to $500 thanks to the Energy Policy Act of 2005.

  • Bring the outdoors in. EPA studies confirm indoor air pollution affects more people than outdoor pollution because of low air circulation indoors and the number of manufactured products such as plastics, glues and paint located inside homes. To counteract these materials, include houseplants in your decor to clean your air naturally and open windows when it's warm enough to get the air moving through the house instead of turning on the air conditioner.
